Modernist route in Reus

Reus is the city in which Antonio Gaudí was born, and is therefore deemed to be the cradle of Modernism. It preserves some places frequented by the genius that was Gaudi during the 16 years he lived here before leaving for Barcelona, or which were related in some way to his life.

The Modernist Route is a pleasant stroll through the centre of Reus, enabling visitors to view the most interesting modernist facades in the city. In order to admire the facades of the 26 buildings chosen, visitors should follow the route and stop in front of the buildings identified with a plaque, featuring the name of the building, the date of construction and the name of the architect.

Of special note on this route is the work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner (Institut Pere Mata, Casa Navàs, Casa Rull and Casa Gasull), which due to the elegance of his style influenced other modernist buildings in Reus.

The Gaudi Centre

The Gaudí Centre is located in the heart of the city's historical centre, and is the new interpretation centre that allows audiences of all ages to discover how Gaudi's creative genius was formed and understand didactically the secrets of his architecture.Through the use of multiple resources (audio-visual, interactive models, set designs, personal objects ...) visitors enter the world of Gaudíin a participative form, opening the senses and the mind to new experiences.

Birth place

At Calle San Vicente 4 is the "birth place" of the architect AntoniGaudíon 25th of June of 1852 and where he lived as a child.  It was the home of his parents, Francisco Gaudí Serra and Antonia Cornet Bertran. A quite large plaque commemorates the Gaudi residence. Also in this house were the boiler works of his maternal grandmother.Gaudi's birthplace is private and cannot be visited. Close to the house, at the junction of Santa Ana andAmargura streets is the "Gaudi child" statue, the work of ArturAldomà from the year 2002, which represents the architect playing during his childhood. The sculpture that is the tribute from the city of Reus to its celebrated architect is a bronze, of 1, 10 metres, located on a bench where the adolescent Gaudi rests, playing with some golden balls with rotating effect.

Pere Mata institute

In 1898 construction began on the Pere Mata psychiatric institute, one of the big projects by the architect LluísDomènechiMontaner, which would mark the beginning of a brilliant modernist era in the city of Reus. From that moment, Domenechdesigned other buildings here and the spirit of Modernism spread with fervour throughout the entire city.  The "los distinguidos" pavilion is, due to its ornamental wealth, of greatest artistic value within the entire hospital complex, as it retains the spectacular decorative repertoire so inherent to Modernism. It is the only pavilion that can be visited and diverse cultural events are held here.

Casa Navàs

Designed by the architect LluísDomènechiMontaner, Casa Navàs is due to its singularity one of the very best examples of modernism at European level. Built between 1901 and 1907, and located in the very heart of the city, DomènechiMontanerplanned for Joaquim Navàsa building that would host his client's new home and also his commercial establishment, and which displayed on the Mercadal square an imposing stone facade with a tower on the corner. Unfortunately, in 1938, during the Civil War, the effects of a bombing raid destroyed the original slim tower and its tiered crown.
